Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word meaning "non-violence" or "do no harm". it is one of the foundational principles of yoga and a foundational ethical principle for psychologists and other healthcare providers.
Himsa (violence/harm) arises out of fear, and fear leads to insecurity, which causes us to feel separate from others—alone and misunderstood.
Ahimsa is not just about avoiding physical violence; it also reminds us to keep our mental and emotional well-being in mind. It reminds us that practicing non-violence involves treating ourselves with kindness, compassion, and self-acceptance.
Ahimsa is self-love.

From a neuro-affirming approach (understanding, acceptance, accommodation and inclusion) a range of evidenced-based therapy modalities (Attachment informed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), use of video feedback, Child-Centered, Non-Directive Play Therapy) are integrated based on you/ your child's individual needs and goals.
We regularly review progress to ensure our clients are getting the most effective treatment possible.
Individual therapy sessions may be offered to children or parents who are experiencing a range of mental health challenges, from anxiety, depression, as well as emotional, behavioural and relationship issues. We provide evidence-based treatments to help clients build resiliency, develop healthy coping skills, and achieve their goals.
Parent coaching can help families to enhance the caregiving relationship, create a more positive and supportive family environment to support their child's development to meet their specific needs. Through identifying broad and specific goals for therapy, parents develop skills to improve communication and collaboratively resolve problems and conflicts. Through repeated practice, children internalise these skills as they develop, positively impacting their relationships with others, both within and beyond their family. Every family has unique strengths, and we work with families to identify those strengths and build on them to create a more positive and supportive family environment.
Group programs provide a supportive environment for clients to connect with others who are facing similar challenges. We can offer evidenced-based group programs for caregivers, including Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) and Tuning Into Kids that aim to enhance family emotional regulation and attachment security. Please contact us to register your interest.
Our teletherapy sessions allow clients to receive quality mental health care from the comfort and convenience of their own home. We utilize a secure and easy-to-use platform to provide clients with a safe and confidential space to discuss their concerns and work towards their goals.
Sometimes, the clinical environment does not meet a client's sensory and/or communication needs. Walking in nature can often enhance therapeutic outcomes for those clients. Walking outdoors during your therapy session can help provide a useful context for mindfulness-based techniques to help reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and cultivate greater self-awareness and acceptance. Initial assessment in the clinic is required to determine if this can be offered and is suitable to your needs.

The world can be a difficult place to live in, and we all need help sometimes. No one way of doing things works for everyone. We will work together to find the right way for you. We’ll spend the first session getting to know each other and deciding if we’ll work well together.

Ahimsa Clinical Psychology currently offers a family-centered practice, for parents and their children who may be experiencing developmental delay and/or neurodevelopmental differences. From a neuro-affirming approach (understanding, acceptance, accommodation and inclusion) a range of psychological services are provided including parent coaching, parent training, counselling, individual child therapy, and support for neurodevelopmental diagnostic assessments.
A “Neuro Affirming” approach to care is a therapeutic method that recognizes and respects neurological differences as natural variations of the human brain. It emphasizes creating an inclusive environment and treatment plans that cater to the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals, such as those with ADHD, Autism, or Dyslexia. This approach does not view neurodivergence as a defect needing correction but as an integral part of a person’s identity, aiming to empower them to utilize their strengths and navigate their challenges. if you'd like to learn more, you could start here: What Does It Mean For a Therapist to Be Neurodiversity-Affirming?
